As the Chinese immigrants awaited their fate on Angel Island, they expressed their emotions through poetry they carved onto the walls of the barracks they were confined in. More than 135 poems have been recorded. There is no direct connection between them except for the languages, the time period, and place. Within these ancient Chinese characters are the true hopes, dreams, fears, and expectations of early American immigrants. By interpreting the poetry, we can begin to understand the immigrant experience.
